SPI grows on you.....

So we have to pack up and head up (over) to Mission Texas tomorrow. 'Fore we go though wanted to share some more thoughts on South Padre. Things that we REALLY like are how clean the public areas of the beaches are here. There are signs and notices that you had better keep it that way or you'll get a visit to a Cameron county four bar hotel and pay some hefty fines. That keeps the beaches pretty dadgum clean.

The beaches here are not that sugar white stuff around LA over to PC. It's a sugar in the raw brown, but it's just as fine textured. Forrest liked walking in it.

Another thing we liked about it is the current lack habitation on the north end of the island. Nothing out there but sand dunes and sea grasses. There are a fair number of public beach access points there, and you can drive on the beach, if you have a 4wd vehicle. Saw a few trucks but nothing excessive or irritating. We were able to let Forrest off the leash there and rip a bit. I'm guessing that there is probably 15 miles of this type beach after you get past the last populated area. All of this is subject to change in the near futher though. There are fore sale signs posted along the road, both beach and bayside.

The people here are mostly friendly. I get the impression that the hispanics simply 'tolerate' the gringo's/gringa's but they are not overt about it. Obviously we are here during their "off" season, read not spring break, so there could be some significant difference during those times. Also, during the winters, there are tons of snowbirds, or what they call "Winter Texans" down here.

All in all, I would like to have a bit more time in this area to explore some more. If any of ya'll get the chance to come, do it.... but sooner rather than later.......
