Cape Blanco and Port Orford

Hola Amigo's and Amigette's......

Took a heading of south by southwest this morning for a look at things down that way. We slept a little late and when we got up the sun was actually shining and it got most of the way to 70 before the wind started..... balmy..... :-)

So remember back in Washington when we ran across the Ocean Spray company and the cranberry bogs? Well, I believe there are more of them here in Oregon than up there. We found a BUNCH of them today. Here's a bog....

This coming weekend here in Bando, they have their annual Cranberry Festival. Shame we won't be here for it... :-)

So out in Cape Blanco State Park we found one of these...

Seem to be a bunch of them along this coast..... Cape Blanco sticks WAY out into the Pacific and has some really cool rocks in it's bays.... in fact, it's as far West as you can go in Oregon, without getting wet and cold and possibly eaten by a giant squid....

This is looking back north. The wind was blowing so hard up here Karen could barely stand up while she was shooting these pics. Forrest was trying to pee on a weed but it was blowing so hard he couldn't "work it out"... :-)

This is looking south from the cape....

Once we got back out to 101, we were only about 4 miles from Port Orford, so we thought we head down there and see if we could find some lunch. It's a really small town and there was nothing along main street that looked interesting in the way of food. Caught a sign that said Griff's Seafood and pointed towards The Port of Port Orford. Off we went....

Very interesting port. Every port we've been here has been in a protected harbor like you expect with a bunch of docks and boat slips. What we found here was a protected harbor, but there were NO docks or slips....

Here's the first row of the COMMERCIAL fishing fleet....

Look at the "trailer" under the red and white boat. There's two more rows of these boats and two 25 ton cranes on the edge of the wharf that pick up the boats and sets them in the water. Not at all sure why they do it like this. It's a huge bay.

At the other end of this row of boats is this...

Griff's. Write it down. Come eat here. You will not be disappointed! Very small. The room on the right with the two windows. That's the eating place. I think there about 8 tables there. The room on the right was a bait and tackle shop, seafood market and in the back a museum.

If you were standing in the door of Griff's looking out towards the North, this what you would have seen. Can't tell it from this picture, but if you we're standing on that rocky point wearing a kilt, you would have had you're kilt blown up around your ears..... calm in the bay though..

This is one of the kelp beds that surround the jetties in the harbor. Kelp stalks are all over the beaches here, instead of shells.

This is looking back North from the wharf.

Port Orford is a small town with nothing apparent to offer a traveler. Then you find the Port and it's views and Griff's and you understand that taking that right turn just _MIGHT_ turn into something we can chew on for a long time.

So today was laundry day. Karen was chatting with a lady while doing that fun lil chore. The lady suggested we eat at a place on Beach Loop road called Lord Bennett's. It was what she said it would be, good food. Put it on your list too. The view would have been awesome, if the fog would have moved north or south. It's foofoo food, but it didn't suck.....

So tomorrow if moving day for us. We are heading on down to the Brookings area. Not sure where we are gonna light yet, so might not have internet for a few days. Brookings is just north of the State line. This will be our last stop in Oregon. While we did not spend any time inland in Oregon, ya'll need to put this state on your list of come see it places.....
