Taos and the high country

We lit in Taos yesterday. Haven't had time to explore any yet, but the drive up was beautiful. We left I25 in Sante Fe and picked up US 285 again. We've spent a LOT of time on 285 coming up from Texas. It ranges from a 4 lane limited access at 75 miles an hour to a two lane back country road. Outside of Santa Fe it's mostly 2 lane but amazing. We have also been shadowing the Rio Grande since South Padre. Well here's what it did to northern New Mexico!

We came over a hill in the road found this view. Amazing!

We also learned that what looks like a nice short distance on a map, might not translate into that on a road. We had planned to stay at Cimarron Canyon State park about 30 miles outside of Taos. Wellllllllllll, the road to get to the canyon is an amazing drive in and of itself, UNLESS you have another 32' dragging along behind the truck. We drove about 24 miles on a two lane mountain road going up and over ridges and down into canyons with the longest straight stretch maybe and 1/8 of a mile. Some of the switch backs I probably could have seen the back of the trailer if I'd opened my eyes. :-) Got into Eagles Nest and thought, ok we'll be alright now. Another 10 miles and we finally found the state park. No camp site that we could put our rig into. So we get to turn around and do it all over again. By the time we got back to Eagles Nest, I had gotten used to driving it.

Came back to Taos and got a site in a decent commercial park here. Here's our front yard.

Our view is a valley surrounded by mountains. Yesterday late, we had an awesome storm blow in. Actually rained until around 11:00 or so.

Oh yeah, it's 50 degrees right now. I turned the AC off in the trailer yesterday around 3:00. Not sure when we'll have to turn it back on. There is still snow on the peaks around Eagles Nest in the shaded canyons. Feels great after all that mess in Texas!

Later ya'll....

The first picture in this entry is spectacular if you enlarge it. No wonder folks like the weather there...it's 90-ish here and VERY muggy--typical Florida I guess.

Yep. Found a couple more of those peaks today too. It was actually pretty warm down in the valley, probably 85 or so, but you drive 15 miles up into the canyons and it's 60. I REALLY love this area. I could live here.
