Sand Trout!

Hola kiddies.......

So Pop and I got a hot tip from a guy while we were coming back into the marina day before yesterday. We had been out from the east pass off the Suwanee and up in Barnett creek. We found a few fish up there but nothing to write home about, so I didn't.. :-)

Anyhoo, the dood coming back into the marina at the same time were, told us to head out towards Alligator point and channel marker #4. Told us he had over 100 sand trout in his cooler. Now says I to myself, yeah right..... and monkey's might fly out your butt too..... and if you DID catch all them fish, you wouldn't be telling us where you caught them......

Well monkey's did not fly out his butt and he did in fact catch all them fish, and he did not tell us a fib about where he caught them. Yesterday we headed back down to Salt Creek to launch the yacht to see if we could find channel marker #4 out from alligator point. I keep mentioning where the honey hole is, cuz I don't think any of ya'll will come down here and raid our fish... :-)

If ya do, be prepared to be boarded and flogged. I have been training with the Somali's and I can catch your ship and kick your stearn now.....

Yeah so, back to the fishing. After we figured out where the channel was and which side of the marker's I should be on, I was right by the way... we made our way out the mouth of the pass and way the hell out there in the distance was a blob that looked like a bunch of boats hanging out. After the two mile zig zag ride on either side of 2' of water, we sho' nuff found around 20 other boats sitting smack dab on our honey hole.... you know, the one the dood told us about on the way back into the marina...... well it seems the dood tole everyone else in dixie county too.....

Wasn't gonna stop us, after the ride out, so we eased on in amongst the other fisherpeople and dropped anchor. We had not been stopped two minutes before Pop boated the first fish. I let him work them for a while so he wouldn't feel so bad after I got started and smoked him on the fish count! I'm a nice guy like that. We were out there maybe 2.5 hours and caught somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 fish. I caught a fair number of short Speckled Sea trout. They gots to be at least 15" and not more than 24" to eat. The sand trout which are a direct cousin of the spec's have no size or catch limit. We ended up keeping 8 of the monsters. Definitely a big time was had by Old fart and not as old fart though! Can't wait for the next trip....

We intended on taking pics on the water and then of the fish when we got back. We forgot right up until we had almost finished cleaning them.... We managed to hang on to a little one for a pic though. The fish is the little one..... the old dood ain't so little.......
