B.A.T.'s

Got up this morning and the fog was still thick as split pea soup. Decided that we might take a run north by east and find someplace that wasn't socked in solid. We found a place. Little place called Jedidiah Smith State Park. What's there you might ask? ...... go ahead.... ask......

Wellllll.......

We found a lil' ole tree to rest on...... This is the first of the redwood's that we'll get to see. There are several groves in and around this park, although it's not the biggest area for coastal redwoods.

Zoomed back a bit to give you some more sense of scale. Sitting next to one of those old beautiful guys is just one more way that nature can us feel way smaller than we think we are. This tree has been living for over a thousand years!
This one of it's neighbors about a 100' away. Look up and this is what you see......

No way to give you a real sense of that this looks and feels like. And another thing that's amazing about this. We still have not made it to the big trees yet.......

And here's another amazing thing. These trees don't have a large taproot. They have a very shallow root system that spreads out and interconnects with the others around it. This is what helps keep these trees standing, combined with their sheer mass and weight.

Tonights quiz....

What's this?...

Some of these knarly old dudes have smoked a vehicle or two..... check out his scars....

This ride was on highway 199 heading back south towards Cresent City. Nice road that runs through several of the redwood groves. Another good rode to ride a scooter on for you scooter riders out there...... at least those that have scooters NOT in the recovery shops that is.... :-)

It was big fun and we are looking forward to doing more of the redwoods further south.

So after we finished this, we rode back north and went out to Harris Beach. Nice state park here with some beautiful beach.....

Here's a little video that gives you some sense of the fog and the rock picking stoop too.. :-)

The beach here is full of driftwood. Apparently some folks use this to build "camps" even though the beach is in a State park...

Here's what they do...

And.....

So that's what we did today...... tomorrow we wash the truck... :-)

I'm assuming the scooter in the shop comment was towards me, or did Matt get a boo-boo on his? That's awesome, me and shell have to make it out there before we die....

It was made for BOTH of your benefit. Yep, he made contact with a jeep while attempting to come back from NC. He is ok, well, still ugly as hell, but physically ok. The scooter has to go to the plastic surgeon......

Ya'll fly today?

me thinks it might be white clover...You could build a few houses with lumber from one of those redwoods.

OK I will go with my first guess which I didn't make, since I thought it was shamrock..but me thinks it only grows in Ireland for the little people to live under. Now if you have seen any little people in the forest, them maybe this is a good guess. If not, go ahead and blab it out, as I don't have a clue.

Well, it sho 'nuff LOOKS like a shamrock. And it might be, I thought I heard little feets scurryin' away when we pulled up.....

The folks out here claim that it's redwood sorrel though..... :-)
